Join curators Cat Gibbard from Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, and Joe Lyward from Hweg for the day and explore the vibrant world of textile art with an exclusive, day-long exploration of three unique exhibitions.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at contemporary textile art across three inspiring venues. With a limited group size, you’ll have the chance to engage directly with curators and an artist, gaining personal insights and a deeper understanding of the works. Whether you’re a textile enthusiast or curious to explore this medium, this day promises a rich blend of creativity, conversation, and connection.

Through guided discussions, you’ll uncover the intricate stories behind each textile work, with special insights from the curators and exhibiting artist Siobhan McLaughlin at Hweg.

The day will begin with coffee and cake at Newlyn Art Gallery, followed by a tour of Social Fabric, where exhibition curator Cat will share her inspiration for the show, along with the themes and ideas behind the works exhibited.

Then we’ll take an invigorating walk to Joe’s art space, Hweg, on Causewayhead in Penzance where you’ll meet Siobhan McLaughlin and view her exhibition, Pilgrimages.

This will be followed by a short walk down to The Exchange for the second half of Social Fabric, and more insights from Cat.

After a light lunch in the Gallery Café, we’ll travel together by train to Tate St Ives where we’ll walk and talk our way through the work of Romani artist and activist Małgorzata Mirga-Tas.

Entrance to Newlyn Art Gallery, The Exchange, Tate St Ives, return train fare to St Ives, morning refreshments and lunch are all included in the ticket price.

Social Fabric is an exhibition of textile-based art showing across both our venues, presenting the work of contemporary female artists whose practices revalue old wisdoms and techniques using traditional textile skills with fresh perspectives. Participating artists: Lyn Barlow, Nicole Chui, Lenka Clayton, Julie Cook, Ali Corder, Aya Haidar, Elizabeth Loveday, Angela Maddock, Amarjeet Nandhra, Low Profile, Jamila Prowse, Celia Pym.

Małgorzata Mirga-Tas is a Romani visual artist, educator and activist. Born in 1978, she lives and works in Czarna Góra, a village at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland.

Mirga-Tas is known for her textile collages created with materials and fabrics that are mainly gathered from family and friends. Her visual storytelling comes from a feminist perspective and challenges stereotypical representations of Roma people. Often working in collaboration with other women, she sews pieces of clothing, handkerchiefs, tablecloths, curtains and sheets together to create vivid portraits and scenes from everyday life.

Siobhan McLaughlin (b.1994) is an artist and curator based in Glasgow. She graduated with a First Class MA (Hons) in Fine Art at Edinburgh University in 2019.

“My practice combines personal experiences of walking and nature with material experimentation to create non-traditional landscape paintings. Alongside painting, I use drawing, basic weaving, printmaking and installation to explore themes of place, struggle, memory and sustainability. I’ve been sewing remnant materials to form the base of my paintings since 2016, and am continually fascinated by the interactions between paint and material.

Recent work has evolved from time in the Black Isle and Cornwall.
